After spending twenty years in a psychiatric hospital for the axe-murder of her cheating husband, Lucy Harbin (Joan Crawford) is anxious about re-entering society.
After her release, she goes to stay with her her brother and sister-in-law at their farm. Lucy’s adult daughter Carol (Diane Baker) (who, at the age of three, witnessed her mother killing her father) also lives on the farm. When a series of axe-murders occurs on the farm, everyone begins to suspect Lucy has not been completely reformed.
